Out of the Blue

Individuals born in December can choose from three beautiful, bluish gemstones to highlight their birth month. Choose the one that best fits your style!

Turquoise
Admired for centuries, turquoise’s popularity goes waaay back to the funerary mask of King Tut. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) suggests turquoise for someone who’s natural and earthy. The name is derived from the French “turquois” for “Turkish,” since the mineral first made its way to Europe via Turkey in the 16th century. Also considered the gemstone for 11th wedding anniversaries, turquoise is the name we give today to anything that resembles this striking gemstone in color.

Blue zircon
Sounding more like the name of a Marvel action figure than a precious gemstone, blue zircon comes chiefly from Sri Lanka and Australia. One of the oldest minerals on the planet, zircon was thought to drive away evil spirits and promote rest and sleep back in the middle ages. The stone was reportedly especially popular in Victorian times. Not to be confused with “cubic zirconia,” zircon commonly occurs as brownish red. Blue, however, is probably the most popular color.

Tanzanite
Only found in Tanzania, this royal-looking and more modern gemstone was only discovered in the 20th century near Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. Tanzanite is often recommended more for earrings, pendants or special occasions rings since it’s a “softer” gem due to its vulnerability ranking 6-7 on the Mohs scale (a diamond is a 10). Tanzanite is also considered the gemstone of the 24th wedding anniversary.
