Not One, Not Two, But THREE Choices for June Birthdays

Mike Levine

June birthdays can choose from three popular birthstones – Pearl, Alexandrite and Moonstone.

Pearls are organic gems that grow inside saltwater or freshwater mollusks. Cultured pearl technicians plant irritants into mollusks and the mollusk secrets a substance that was perhaps once said to be “teardrops from heaven.”  (See “Pearls of Wisdom”). Most pearls are naturally reflective, giving them a creamy white or iridescent sheen. Cultured pearls can also be dyed.

Moonstone is not as common. It’s a relatively soft gemstone, ranking a 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness, which makes it not as durable as other stones. As described by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), “A ghostly sheen moves under the surface of this feldspar (a mineral), like moonlight glowing in the water.”

Interesting fact: Florida adopted Moonstone as their official state gem in 1980 honoring the American astronauts landing on the moon.

According to more modern lists, Alexandrite is another lovely June choice. This beautiful stone can appear bluish green in the daylight and redder at night or in incandescent light. Considered one of the rarest gemstones, Alexandrite wasn’t discovered until the 19th century.
