Finding True Value

Mike Levine

We recently struck reader gold! Since so many of you liked our appraisal post highlighting David Craig Jewelers for your expert gemstone, diamond and other fine jewelry appraisals, we decided to follow up with more information.

Types of Appraisals
Many of you use our jewelry appraisals for insurance valuations in case of theft or loss. We determine the replacement cost for a piece of jewelry in the current climate. Another popular appraisal request is for what’s called “fair marketing valuation.” We’ll let you know what your item is worth if you want to sell it based on what, in our best judgement, the current market will pay. But David Craig Jewelers appraises jewelry for many other important reasons including:

  • Identifying value for charitable contributions
  • Assessing value for tax deductions
  • Estimating division of property or liquidation value in a divorce settlement
  • Evaluating casualty losses

On-Site Expertise and Honesty
Finding a trustworthy jewelry appraiser is critical.  According to Jewelers of America, “Intentionally over-valuing items on appraisals is considered illegal under Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines and unethical by all nationally recognized appraisal organizations.”

If you want to discover what your treasured ring, broach or bracelet is worth, feel secure you are in the hands of one of the country’s most competent and trusted jewelry appraisers. You will work with an on-site expert gemologist appraiser with international knowledge of the field, high ethical standards and continuing education certifications.

Safety is a Priority
In this turbulent time, it’s good to know Pennsylvania has “opened up” for business. But we want to remind customers that David Craig Jewelers still performs frequent sanitation, and we require the wearing of masks.
